Should public service employees be immune from the suffering of those in the private sector?

In these times of high unemployment in the private sector should public service employees be immune thereby exacerbating the suffering of private sector employees? Government can only pay employees from monies taken from those in the private sector. Should these employees be a golden cow to politicians who lack the spine to do what is right?
